Gateway District Group 5

People think they know what is South of the Gateway Mall. Everyone thinks it's just the Road Home. It's much more than that. The area between sixth and second West contains many of the diverse districts in Salt Lake City. The reason people seem to overlook them is because if you aren't looking for them there is a good possibility that you will miss them.

We knew that walking down second South would get us to Old Greek Town. What we didn't know was that the only thing left from Greek Town was the trax station. We would have literally not known when we got to Greek Town if we hadn't seen the sign. Even with the sign we were a little unconvinced. It didn't seem as if there was any Greek influence left. We didn't even see any Greek restaurants or anything. In Greek Town was In the Venue, and the complex which are both concert venues. We also walked past a Greek Orthodox church on third and third. The church was the only building from Old Greek Town still being used for it's original purpose.

After that we ventured to what was once Japan Town. What we were looking for exactly we really weren't sure. We saw many parking garages and a few office buildings. After wandering around the Gateway area for some time we finally decided to just look up the address. It's a good thing we did or who knows how much longer it would have taken for us to find it. When we finally did get to the church we

were surprised at how little was left of Old Japan Town. On one side of the street there was a Japanese Church of Christ. On the other side there was a Salt Lake Buddhist Temple. We didn't see anyone at the temple, it was a Thursday evening after all, but there was a sign posted next to the door that advertised many activities that the temple offers showing that it does encourage interacting between people, but only during set times.

If we thought finding Japan Town and Greek Town was hard than Little Italy was impossible. We literally

walked right past it without even knowing it was there. It is now home to mostly restaurants and a few buildings. Cindy even took a picture in front of one of the buildings without us knowing we were in the Italian district. That shows how much Salt Lake City has changed since it was built. That is why most people don't know where the ethnic districts are, because they have almost all been destroyed and are now full of commercial buildings.
